Wheeling brush fire 3-31-14

Here's a message from Larry Shapiro:

It’s that time of year again… The RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning regarding brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, they were also responding to additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Fire crews from Buffalo Grove were also dealing with blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22.

The railroad temporarily halted all train traffic through the area and ordered a recently passed train to stop for inspection. Fortunately, all the fires were brought under control within about 90 minutes. Here are some photos from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road.

It’s a reminder of how quickly these types of incidents can escalate, especially with dry conditions and wind. Stay safe, and keep an eye on local updates if you live in the area.
